On 11th April, 1916, the 12th Rifle Brigade battalion of 60 Brigade, 20th Division moved into the front line in the Ypres salient. As the relief of one battalion by another nearly always attracted enemy shell fire in an attempt to disrupt proceedings, it is likely that it was this that caused the death of Charles Gough on that day but the Battalion Diary makes no mention of any casualties. |
